Spiritual Guidance

Arch and person

God gives us everything we need to be happy in the present moment no matter what evidence to the contrary there may be. A good spiritual director helps us to sustain that trust.
                                                                              - Thomas Keating

What Is Spiritual Direction?
Spiritual Direction is one person assisting another to discover and live out in the context of the Christian community his or her deepest values and life goals in response to God's initiative - Elizabeth Liebert, San Francisco Theological Seminary.

What Is Spiritual Formation?

Spiritual formation is the activity of the Holy Spirit which molds our lives into the likeness of Jesus Christ. This likeness is one of deep intimacy with God and genuine compassion for all of creation. The Spirit works not only in the lives of individuals but also in the church, shaping it into the Body of Christ. We cooperate with this work of the Spirit through certain practices that make us more open and responsive to the Spirit's touch, disciplines such as Sabbath keeping, scripture study, works of compassion and justice, discernment, worship, hospitality, spiritual friendships, and contemplative silence.

Comments from those who receive spiritual Guidance from The Sanctuary Foundation for Prayer:

Knowing you are here and that I will be coming back, reminds me to keep talking to the Lord. This feels like a very safe place and very holy. It is like I am coming home. The son/sun is always shining in this room.

Spiritual Direction is part of my devotional life, part of my God connection. It is like having Jesus present and being able to trust. It offers stability and accountability in my prayer life.

All pastors need spiritual direction.
When I am going through difficult times between visits it is helpful to know I have someone to look at this with. This allows me to put problems aside and move forward knowing I have a time and place to take them up with my spiritual guide.

Our last session has opened several
doors of thought and prayer. I am deeply grateful for the Lord's direction/clarity in
my life and I praise God for your availability to the Spirit's wisdom and prompting.
